Pianos are usually tuned to a modified version of the system called equal temperament. (See Piano key frequencies for the theoretical piano tuning.) In all systems of tuning, every pitch may be derived from its relationship to a chosen fixed pitch, which is usually A440 (440 Hz), the note A above middle C.

Cost range for a piano tuning Today, the cost for a good piano tuning can range from $140 to $300. Additionally, a pitch correction is sometimes available for under $100.

Current concert pitches The most common standard around the world is currently A = 440 Hz. In practice most orchestras tune to a note given out by the oboe, and most oboists use an electronic tuning device when playing the tuning note. Some orchestras tune using an electronic tone generator.

Pianos are usually tuned to a standard pitch (usually A 440) and every other note on the piano is tuned with reference to that note.
